Test Before You Trust: Faith, Money and Media Discernment

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” — 1 John 4:1

That is not a suggestion — it is an instruction.

John’s command was about teaching, but the principle travels: anything that asks for your trust must survive your testing. Here are three places to practise it.

Faith: check the pulpit — including this one

A teacher says, “The Bible says…” — and too often the sentence ends there in our minds, with full authority. Don’t let it.

Where? Can you open it and read it in context?

In context? Does the surrounding passage support the claim — or has the verse been imported to decorate somebody’s idea?

With what fruit? Does this teaching produce love, holiness, and humility — or fear, dependence, and giving under pressure? By their fruits you shall know them.

And we say it here too: check our own notes against Scripture. A ministry that fears examination has already failed it.

Money: discernment is financial wisdom

Every week, somebody’s “guaranteed returns” empties somebody’s savings.

Listen: Scripture’s money wisdom is boring, and therefore ignored — work diligently, save steadily, avoid get-rich-quick schemes, never carry debts you don’t understand.

Before any opportunity, run the questions:

Can I verify this independently — outside the promoter’s own materials and testimonies?

Where does the return actually come from? If nobody can explain it simply, that IS the explanation. Walk away.

Am I being rushed? Pressure is a strategy. Truth can wait a week; schemes cannot.

And hear this clearly: no genuine ministry sells blessing. God is not a transaction. Any message that prices His favour has failed the test — reject it completely.

Media: your phone is a pulpit too

You will hear more “teaching” this week from your phone than from any preacher — forwarded sermons, viral prophecies, outrage clips, miracle videos. Apply the same habit.

Pause before forwarding. If you have not verified it, YOU are the misinformation now. Yes, you.

Check the source. Who first said this? Do they have a name, a face, accountability — or only a forwarded label?

Watch your emotions. Content engineered to enrage or terrify you is content that profits from you. A calm mind checks; a provoked mind shares. Which one will you be?

Do it today

Pick ONE forwarded message, ONE money opportunity, or ONE sermon claim. Run it through the three questions — Where is it written? Can I verify it? What fruit does it bear? — and act on what you find. Not tomorrow. Today.

Discernment is not suspicion. Suspicion trusts nothing; discernment tests everything so it can trust what is true. That is the difference between a cynic and a Berean.

Choose to be a Berean.

God bless your discernment.
